About this web site
The Fencing in British Columbia is a community-driven website that grew
out of a set of fencing web pages hosted by Morgan Burke, beginning in
1993 with the Usenet Fencing FAQ.
Over time, these online references expanded to include helpful links
and indexes to various online resources for fencers, including
materials on the CFF and USFA web sites, which went online around 1996, and various provincial organizations which began to appear after that.
By 1998 there was still no official B.C. fencing online presence, so the unofficial "Fencing in British Columbia" web pages were added to the above set of fencing pages in August 1998 to fill this void.
In the same vein, an unofficial electronic mailing list was started
shortly after by Matthew Yun to distribute tournament and other
announcements to the B.C. fencing community. An unofficial
electronic newsletter called Coupé
was produced in 1999 and 2000, and also distributed to this list.
In 2001, the email list was migrated to the Egroups online service
(which was subsequently bought by Yahoo!). This email list is
still active, and you can sign up here.
Database-driven services were added to the website in 2003,
including online tournament registrations, membership applications, and
club directories. Other services soon followed, including forums,
classifieds, and tools to export data to the CFF. The Fencing in
British Columbia website underwent a makeover
in 2004 to reflect that the webmaster, Morgan Burke, was now president
of the BCFA, and so the "unofficial" website of BC Fencing was
increasingly hosting official documents, announcements, and services on behalf of the BCFA.
The official materials of the BCFA were split off into their own
section in 2005, and the community site got a new makeover to reflect a
return to its original mission as the unofficial B.C. fencing community
site. In the fall of 2006, the BCFA finally went officially
online with its own website.
Shortly after this, BCfencing.ca added numerous additional online
services for fencers in B.C., such as photo sharing, a community event
calendar, and instant websites to promote programs and events.
